Materials and Methods 2.1 Animal studies 2.1.1 Materials Ketamine, xylazine, carprofen, vetadine, lacrilube, terramycin, sodium lactate, penicillin G sodium, heparin sodium, pentobarbital and supramid wire were obtained from Provet (Auckland, NZ). Ethanol was obtained from PureScience (Wellington, NZ). Cocaine-HCl (BDG Synthesis, Wellington, NZ) was dissolved in physiological saline (0.9%) containing heparin sodium (3 U/mL) and made up to a solution of 1.65 g/L (rats were considered to average 330 g). Each intravenous infusion was 0.1 mL and delivered over a period of 12 s (0.5 mg/kg/infusion). For intraperitoneal injections, cocaine-HCl was dissolved in physiological saline to a concentration of 2 mg/mL. Surgery equipment: silastic and tygon tubing were from Thermo Fisher Scientific (Auckland, NZ), silicon, cotton buds and Bostik superglue were obtained from the Warehouse (Wellington, NZ), while gauze swabs were purchased from Global Science (Auckland, NZ). Large screws (CS00395) were obtained from Coastal Fasteners (Wellington, NZ) and small screws (MCPF40210) from Eyeline Optical (Wellington, NZ). The Ostron powder and liquid were obtained from Henry Schein Shalfoon (Auckland, NZ).
